Executive Produced by Andrew Corkin and directed by Carlos Puga, Burma will be playing in competition at the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival. The film stars Christopher Abbott (HBO's GIRLS, Uncorked's Father/Son)
Synopsis: When Dr. Lynn abandoned his terminally ill wife on her deathbed, he left his three children Susan, Christian, and Win essentially orphaned. Almost a decade later, on the eve of their annual family reunion, Dr. Lynn unexpectedly shows up at Christian's door claiming he can justify his nine-year absence. Drug-addled and emotionally vulnerable, Christian reluctantly agrees to escort his father to the reunion, sending an already volatile family environment reeling.
BREAKING: In a low seven-figure deal for U.S. rights, eOne acquired the Jim Mickle-directed We Are What We Are, which premiered last Friday at the Library Center Theatre in the Park City At Midnight section. The plot: a devastating storm washes up clues that lead authorities closer to unraveling the dark secrets of the Parker family, who are cannibals. That premise is not some slasher film, it’s far more stylish and the buyer crowd and audience at the premiere screening ate it up and feel they’ve found a director with a voice worth hearing. The film has gotten strong reviews beyond the genre crowd, and it gives eOne a good theatrical offering. Deal was made on the flight back to Los Angeles. I’ve heard both the WME Global and eOne teams were on the same flight back from Park City. They haggled but by the time the plane landed, eOne hit the asks made by the agents, who denied this colorful story. Somehow, it fits with the frenzied pace of deals due to the influx of new buyers. eOne will put it out in a platform theatrical release.
The suitors I heard were in the mix here included Magnolia, Lionsgate and Drafthouse. This festival has been way better than anybody expected, and the Midnight Section will lead to several deals. Among the pics with buyers circling include S VHS.
“This all adds up to proof for me that Jim Mickle is the strongest new voice in American genre film, one I can only compare to the golden era of John Carpenter.”
“Where the original tilted into frenzied urban chaos as the family’s flesh-starved offspring set about finding suitable victims, the new film hits a stealthier stride, locating the most crucial conflict in the family itself.”
“Outdoing the original by a long shot, Mickle’s slow-burn take on the story is poetic, creepy and, finally, satisfyingly gross.”
“In an age that sees more rehashes than ever, Jim Mickle’s American interpretation of Jorge Michel Grau’s Mexican horror film, WE ARE WHAT WE ARE could be a standard going forward.”
“The tension, the relieved laughter and dramatic heights that preceded the moment were testimony to WAWWA’s unexpected power; a film that provides a not only a great thriller ride, but a remarkably touching look at a very real-life family under stress.”
Based on the Jorge Michel Grau's Mexican horror Somos Lo Que Hay which played the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, We Are What We Are is Uncorked's latest feature film directed by Jim Mickle, and will be playing the Midnight Program in Park City in January for the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
